Project Title: To Mourn a Monument: Cultural Heritage and Conflict

Project Description: The material and visual culture of a civilization provides its descendants with a tangible form of identity and shared “cultural heritage.” In periods of armed conflict, this cultural heritage is often targeted to condemn the memory of a people. The visibility of this destruction is variable, and oftentimes dependent on the identity of the actor. I am interested in studying the differences in iconoclastic behavior between state- and non-state-sponsored actors, particularly concerning the presentation or concealment of cultural erasure.
