Project title: Bleeding in Silence: Exploring the nexus between human rights, menstruation and bodily autonomy.

Project Description: My study employs an interdisciplinary approach to scrutinize the connection between cultural customs and taboos surrounding bodily autonomy, with a specific emphasis on the interplay between child marriage and menstruation. Utilizing gender studies, anthropology, and human rights perspectives, this project aims to uncover the underlying dynamics perpetuating gender-based discrimination and injustice. Through qualitative research methods, including interviews with marginalized individuals and a thorough review of existing literature, I investigate the infringement of women's rights caused by entrenched cultural norms. By focusing on the stigma surrounding menstruation, which often leads to practices like child marriage and restricts agency, this study seeks to shed light on the sociocultural factors contributing to gender inequality and poverty cycles. Moreover, by analyzing regional photography and art, I aim to explore the cultural evidence and consequences of gender-based discrimination and bodily autonomy restrictions. Ultimately, my research endeavors to elucidate the structural inequalities that sustain gender-based discrimination and advocate for transformative change through an intersectional lens. By addressing the root causes of gender-based discrimination and child marriage, this study contributes to a deeper understanding of human rights violations and underscores the urgency of advocating for the rights and dignity of marginalized women and girls.

Most Important Accomplishment: One of my proudest achievements was collaborating with CHHORI, a nonprofit organization in Nepal. Together, we devised a comprehensive plan to deliver orientation programs across 14 government schools in Lalitpur. These programs aimed to educate students on crucial topics including menstrual health, domestic abuse, sexual abuse, and psychosocial counseling. As a Nepali woman, contributing to this initiative was very rewarding, and I am very grateful for the opportunity to have been involved.

Reflections on the College Scholar Program: The College Scholar Program allows me to explore my genuine interests, research, and take classes that I am passionate about. This customized approach enables me to research the evolution of my interests and gain access to various resources that help me succeed. Furthermore, the program provides a supportive community where I can collaborate and ask questions. I am immensely grateful for this opportunity because it has given me immense opportunities to succeed and an inspiring group of peers with whom I can exchange ideas.
